Bersih: Putrajaya's funding for Pelangai schools an abuse

PELANGAI BY-ELECTION | Bersih has accused Putrajaya of abusing state resources for the Pelangai by-election by announcing additional funding for three schools in the constituency.

In a statement, the electoral watchdog said this was a form of "undue influence" by the federal government during an election period.

"Although it is not an offence under the law to make any announcement of allocation during an election, it still contradicts the principles of clean and fair elections because the opposition has no access to such resources or government machinery," said Bersih’s steering committee.

On Sept 22, Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying announced additional funding of RM30,000 each for SJKC Manchis and SJKC Telemong while SJKT Ladang Renjok will receive RM50,000.

Lim said this was additional funding on top of the RM2.98 million already allocated for government-aided schools in Pahang.

"We have 25 SJKC (Chinese vernacular schools) in this state and we have allocated RM1.46 million. For SJKT (Tamil vernacular schools), 20 schools will receive RM1.52 million," she said during her visit to the three schools.

Pelangai comprises 28 percent non-Malay voters, mostly in the western part of the constituency.

The Pelangai by-election will be held on Oct 7, with candidates being BN's Amizar Abu Adam, Perikatan Nasional's Kasim Samat and independent Haslihelmey Md Zulhasli.
